Writing a News Feature

A news feature is a nonfiction article that looks at a topic or subject in more depth than a typical hard-news story. It may take a broader, more reflective approach to the topic or angle on it, allowing the writer to offer commentary and analysis. It is generally longer than a straight-up news story and may include more images and multimedia elements. Examples of a news feature include an in-depth profile of a celebrity, an exploration of cultural trends or an investigation of an ongoing event.

Like a news story, a feature should convey the facts quickly and clearly, but it can go further by exploring an issue from an unexpected slant or by incorporating a more narrative style. It should also be richly sourced, so readers get a full picture of the topic.

The type of news feature you write depends on the subject matter and your audience. For example, a travel feature might cover a local restaurant or an unusual Airbnb rental in Auburn, Alabama, while a lifestyle or food and drink feature will give tips on making the most of a four-day hiking trip in Utah’s national parks.

A profile feature explores the background and character of a person, including career, educational and family history. It should begin with a reason why the person is a newsworthy subject at this time, and should be based on an extensive interview. If a potential source is reluctant to talk, try to be politely persistent and to explain why you are interested in their perspective on the topic.
